A large dog bed specification should not be developed by changing size, filling or fabric independently. In OEM development, the factory evaluates the buyer's reference product, required dimensions and target cost together, then adjusts the product shape, finished height, filling system, fabric, washability and packaging before sampling.
Answer First: a production-ready specification combines finished size, shape, height, filling, fabric, washable construction, packaging and target cost. The goal is not to maximize every parameter, but to allocate the specification around the product the buyer intends to sell.
What Should a Large Dog Bed Specification Include?
For B2B sourcing, length and width are only the starting point. A usable specification should also define or evaluate:
- Finished dimensions and height
- Product shape and construction
- Filling or foam system
- Outer fabric
- Removable or fixed cover construction
- Washability requirements
- Compression and retail packaging
- Target product positioning and target cost
If dimensions have not yet been fixed, start with our large dog bed size guide before developing the rest of the specification.
Why Size and Target Cost Cannot Be Evaluated Separately
A larger dog bed does not automatically require the most expensive filling system, and a cost-controlled model does not automatically require a low-value construction.
The development question is where the available specification budget should be allocated. A buyer may prioritize a larger sleeping surface, more finished height, a three-dimensional shape, foam support, a removable cover, a higher-positioned fabric or retail color-box packaging.
Trying to maximize all of these at the same time while maintaining a restrictive target cost can create an unrealistic product.
For example, simply reducing PP-cotton filling in a large construction to reach a low quotation can leave the product visibly collapsed and unable to provide the intended support. In that situation, the factory may need to reconsider the size, height, filling structure or product shape instead of simply removing filling.
Case 1: Cost-Controlled 120 × 85 cm Egg-Crate Foam Mattress
YF147020

The H10 cm figure is the total finished product height, not a claimed 10 cm foam thickness.
This model demonstrates that cost control does not necessarily mean removing the main consumer-facing benefit. A simpler mattress geometry can preserve foam support and washability while keeping the overall construction less complex.
The removable cover can be machine washed. The foam itself is not recommended for machine washing because it absorbs water and becomes very heavy. An additional inner foam liner can be customized if required.
Case 2: When Shape and Volume Become Part of the Specification
YF142265 — Large Donut Cushion

Its 122 × 99 cm footprint is relatively close to YF147020, but the product is structurally very different. The upper section uses PP cotton while the lower section uses shredded foam, with filling contained inside inner liners.
The key question is therefore not simply which filling is “better.” It is what shape, support and finished profile the filling system must create.
Case 3: Engineering a 175 × 105 cm Human-Size Dog Bed
YF142264

This is not simply a “higher version” of the previous models. It solves a different development problem: an oversized footprint, supportive construction and compact shipping configuration must work together.
Three Mass-Production Specifications Compared
| Specification | YF147020 | YF142265 | YF142264 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Finished Size | 120 × 85 × H10 cm | 122 × 99 × H30 cm | 175 × 105 × H28 cm |
| Product Form | Mattress | Large Donut Cushion | Human-Size Bed |
| Filling | Egg-crate foam | PP cotton + shredded foam | Egg-crate foam |
| Fabric | Velvet | Velvet | Polyester rabbit-style velvet |
| Specification Focus | Simple supportive profile | Volume + shaped cushioning | Oversized support |
| Compressed Pack | Optional | 50 × 39 × 29 cm | 45 × 38 × 27 cm |
All three are mature mass-production products. Internal purchase pricing is intentionally not published because actual quotations depend on the final specification, quantity and customization requirements.
Why Finished Size Alone Cannot Predict Shipping CBM
A larger finished dog bed does not necessarily result in a larger compressed package.
YF142265 compresses to approximately:
YF142264 compresses to:
Despite its much larger finished footprint, YF142264 has a smaller specified compressed package in these two production examples.

From Buyer Reference to an OEM Sample
A buyer does not need to calculate every technical parameter before contacting the factory. In actual development, the process is usually:
The factory can adjust fabric, filling, finished height and packaging around an existing mature construction rather than engineering every project from zero.
OEM sourcing reference: standard MOQ is 300 PCS per design, color and size profile. Fast-track sampling is typically 3–7 days, depending on materials and specification complexity.
What Information Should You Send a Dog Bed Factory?
You do not need to specify an exact filling weight if you do not know it. A more useful development brief includes:
- Reference image or competitor product
- Required finished dimensions
- Product shape and intended positioning
- Target cost range
- Support or filling requirements, if essential
- Fabric preference
- Washability requirements
- Compression or retail packaging requirements
- Logo, label and color requirements
The buyer's role is to define the commercial objective. The factory's role is to turn that objective into a specification that can be quoted, sampled and validated.

What specifications should I provide for a custom large dog bed?
Start with the reference design, finished dimensions, intended positioning, target cost, required support features, washability and packaging expectations. The factory can then select a mature comparable construction and adjust the remaining specification.
Does a larger dog bed always require more filling?
Not as a standalone rule. Filling requirements depend on dimensions, finished height, shape and construction. A flat foam mattress and a deep donut cushion can have similar footprints but require very different filling systems.
Can a cost-controlled large dog bed still use egg-crate foam?
Yes. YF147020 is a mass-produced 120 × 85 × H10 cm mattress using egg-crate foam and a removable machine-washable cover. Cost control can come from a simpler product structure rather than automatically removing the core support feature.
Can large dog beds be compression-packed?
Many can, but the final method depends on the construction. YF142265 and YF142264 both use integrated compression with color-box packaging, while compression is optional for YF147020.
Should the foam inside a removable dog bed cover be machine washed?
For the YF147020 construction discussed here, the removable cover is machine washable, but the foam itself is not recommended for machine washing because it absorbs water and becomes very heavy.
Build the Specification Around the Product Goal
A successful large dog bed specification is not created by maximizing size, thickness or filling independently.
YF147020, YF142265 and YF142264 show three different allocation strategies: a simple supportive mattress, a high-volume layered donut cushion and an oversized human-size foam bed.
The better starting question for an OEM project is therefore not, “How much filling should a large dog bed contain?” It is:
