Oversize does not have to mean rectangular.
The round, bolster and sofa builds above are only the current production references. A large round dog bed of XL round dog bed beyond the reference above is built to your diameter and filling drawing — a 100 cm or 120 cm round oversize build is a routine custom job — and buyers positioning a large dog bed with high sides can set the bolster height per size, because the rim is engineered as a defined channel rather than stuffed. Round-bed programmes below the large size band are covered on our donut dog bed manufacturer page.
A factory that builds oversize dog beds to your drawing, not a catalogue you have to choose from.
A large dog bed manufacturer develops and produces oversize pet bedding to a buyer’s own specification — dimensions, filling, fabric, cover construction, labelling and packaging. It is a different job from selling beds off a shelf: the product is only defined once your size range, filling density and retail packaging have been fixed and sampled.
Oversize beds are the hardest part of a pet bedding range to get right. The weight is higher, the fill volume is larger, the carton is bigger, and the freight cost per unit swings far more than it does on a medium bed. Scaling up a small bed’s construction is a shortcut that shows up later, either as a flattened bed in a customer review or as a container that loads 15 percent below plan.
We manufacture for buyers who cannot afford either outcome. Since 1998 we have produced pet bedding across a 300,000 m2 facility, and large and extra large programmes run through the same sampling and inspection process as everything else — they simply get more attention at the dimension and filling stage.
Four groups of buyers place large-bed programmes with us, and each one needs the specification treated differently:
OEM and ODM development for own-brand ranges, with private-label labels, hang tags and colour matching to an existing collection.
Volume programmes built around a fixed carton specification, so landed cost and container loading stay predictable across repeat orders.
Planogram-ready sizes, retail packaging and printed barcodes, with a dimension range designed to sit in a defined shelf or floor footprint.
Cartons sized for parcel networks and marketplace fee bands, plus photography-ready samples and specification sheets for listing content.
If you are at the stage of comparing suppliers rather than finalising a specification, our groothandel hondenbedden page covers the general sourcing framework. This page is about the engineering decisions that are specific to oversize beds.
Reference dimensions, how a size is quoted, and what happens when a requested size does not work.
Size is specified by overall bed dimension, and on a flat construction that figure is also the sleeping surface the dog gets. Reference bands run by footprint edge length — Large at roughly 70 to 110 cm, 2L / XL at roughly 110 to 130 cm, and 3L / XXL above 130 cm — with the largest mature item on our production record at 175 x 105 x H28 cm, and every band is customisable. Where a bolster or donut rim cuts into the flat area we state the sleeping surface separately — confirm which number a supplier is quoting before approving a sample.
Because we are a factory rather than a reseller, these dimensions are a starting point for your own size range rather than a fixed catalogue.
Footprint edge length by size band. Every size band can be produced to a custom dimension.
| Size Band | Footprint Edge Length | Typische toepassing | Customisable |
|---|---|---|---|
| Large | 70 – 110 cm | Large breeds, most common large-bed SKU | Ja |
| 2L / XL | 110 – 130 cm | Extra large breeds, sofa and nest constructions | Ja |
| 3L / XXL | above 130 cm | XXL and giant breeds, low-profile oversize | Ja |
| Oversize (mature item) | 175 x 105 x H28 cm | Giant breeds, floor and mat formats | Ja |
| Aangepast | Any size, to your drawing | Own-label and programme-specific ranges | Ja |
What a factory can commit to — and what it should push back on.
We support fully custom dimensions: our largest mature production reference is 175 x 105 x H28 cm, and larger dimensions are reviewed as custom projects through engineering assessment and pre-production sampling rather than quoted against a limit. The more useful question is whether a given size and filling combination holds its shape. Every oversize request is reviewed before sampling, and where a large dimension is paired with a filling density too low for the load, we say so and propose a heavier specification rather than producing a bed that will flatten.
| How Sizing Works | Detail |
|---|---|
| Custom dimensions | Any size. Supplied as a dimensioned drawing for approval before sampling. |
| Custom shape | Rectangular, oval, bolster, donut, mat and shaped constructions. |
| Bolster height & filling thickness | Both customisable, and set against the sleeping surface you need to preserve. |
| Technical review | Every oversize request is checked for filling density against finished dimensions. Unworkable combinations are flagged with an alternative. |
| Proof step | Dimensions confirmed on a physical pre-production sample before bulk release. |
Sizing education belongs with the buyer-facing guide, not the specification sheet.
Reference bands and custom limits are what a factory commits to; choosing between them is a buyer-facing question. How to compare actual dimensions, L/2L/3L size labels, bed shapes, filling systems, and oversized production specifications is covered in our large dog bed size guide.
Six construction decisions that determine whether an oversize bed still looks right after a season.
Durability in a large dog bed comes from four things working together: filling density matched to the load, seam construction, face fabric abrasion resistance, and the base structure. A large bed spreads more weight across a wider surface than a medium bed, so a filling that feels firm in a 75 cm bed can feel soft in a 175 cm one.
An oversize bed is specified as a stack rather than a single item. Six decisions are fixed on the drawing before the first sample is cut — and each one is set against the finished dimensions, not copied from a smaller bed.
Why oversize beds flatten — and how it is designed out.
Flattening is a load-distribution problem rather than a materials failure, so it is designed out through a short list of decisions: finished dimensions, filling type, filling density, the target dog weight, compression recovery after packing, and a physical pre-production sample. For oversize programmes the filling is specified after the dimensions are fixed, not before. Where a buyer requests a heavier dog on a low-density filling, we propose a denser specification rather than accepting an order that will generate returns.
Seam reinforcement, bolster channel and base structure.
Higher stitch density and reinforced stress points at corners and along the bolster attachment, where an oversize bed carries the most tension. A tightly woven or coated face fabric can be specified where abrasion resistance is the priority.
Raised rim built as a defined channel rather than a stuffed edge, so the bolster keeps its height instead of collapsing flat after use.
Base panel specified for the dimensions and weight of the bed, with a non-slip underside available for hard flooring retail channels.
Specified per programme, not as a standard feature of the range.
Removable covers and recessed zippers can be specified on any large-bed construction, with the closure placed so it does not sit where the dog lies. Where washability is the defining feature of a programme — shelter, boarding, grooming and veterinary channels, with covers built for repeated laundering — the construction is scoped on our washable dog bed manufacturer page.
Which filling suits which large-bed programme — matched to size, load and price position.
On a large dog bed the filling is chosen by size and price position rather than by material preference: a wider sleeping surface spreads the same fill weight thinner, so a specification that feels firm in a 75 cm bed can feel soft in a 175 cm one. The six filling systems below are available for custom large-bed programmes, and the recommendation follows the target dog weight, the finished dimensions and the retail band the product sits in.
| Vullen | Large-Bed Application |
|---|---|
| PP Katoen | Entry and mid-tier soft beds, where a plush feel matters more than load support |
| High-Density Foam | The standard choice for larger sleeping surfaces carrying heavier dogs |
| Eierkratschuim | Structured support, with contact pressure spread across the surface |
| Geheugenschuim | Premium and orthopaedic-positioned programmes where the price point supports it |
| Shredded Foam | Adjustable fill that also compresses efficiently for carton and freight planning |
| Hybrid Filling | Balances support and cost between a plain foam core and a full memory foam build |
A range of fabric constructions is available, matched to the filling and the intended retail channel.
Fabric is specified together with the filling, because a cover too light for the bed dimensions will show stress at the seams however good the filling is. The library covers woven upholstery fabrics, plush and PV plush, Oxford and coated textiles, corduroy, imitation linen and chenille face cloths, faux leather, and recycled fabric options for programmes with a sustainability requirement. Colour matching against an existing collection is available, with colour continuity checked under controlled lighting before bulk approval.
Where the boundary sits: this page covers filling selection for large beds. Foam technology, density ranges and pressure performance for orthopaedic-positioned products are documented on our fabrikant orthopedisch hondenbed page.

How to calculate carton volume and container loading for an oversize bed programme.
There is no single CBM figure for a large dog bed — the carton changes with every programme — so what we quote is the method: CBM per piece = carton length x width x height in metres, multiplied by pieces per carton to give the shipped volume you pay freight on. Oversize beds are vacuum compressed before cartoning, which typically reduces packed volume by around 60 percent and is the single biggest lever on landed cost in this category.
The formula, and two worked examples from current production.
CBM per carton = L (m) x W (m) x H (m) CBM per piece = CBM per carton ÷ pcs per carton Carton dimensions must be in metres. A 45 x 38 x 27 cm carton is 0.45 x 0.38 x 0.27 m. 45 x 38 x 27 cm = 0.046 CBM per piece| Item | Bed Size (W x D x H) | Carton | CBM / PC | Verpakking |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| YF142264 | 175 x 105 x H28 cm | 45 x 38 x H27 cm / 1 PC | 0.046 | Vacuum Compression |
| YF142266 | 129 x 122 x H30 cm | 45 x 29 x H30 cm / 1 PC | 0.039 | Vacuum Compression |
Practical loading assumes 85–90 percent utilisation, which is the realistic planning figure for carton cargo.
| Container | Internal Volume | Practical Loading | YF142264 (0.046 CBM) | YF142266 (0.039 CBM) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 20GP | ~33 CBM | ~28 CBM | ~600 pcs | ~715 pcs |
| 40GP | ~67 CBM | ~58 CBM | ~1,255 pcs | ~1,480 pcs |
| 40HQ | ~76 CBM | ~68 CBM | ~1,400+ pcs | ~1,735 pcs |
Because carton dimensions change with every programme, the loading plan is calculated to your order rather than quoted from a table, and issued together with the production schedule by our in-house logistics and documentation teams. Needle detection and carton drop testing sit inside our standard large-bed QC process. Four further tests are added when your market or buyer requires them.
Needle detection and carton drop testing are included in our standard large-bed QC process. Needle detection screens each finished piece for broken needles or metal fragments before packing. The carton drop test verifies that the packed bed survives handling and transit. Compression, tensile, puncture and wash tests are added according to the project requirements, scoped to the destination market.

Six checkpoints between incoming fabric and the sealed carton.

Fabric is inspected on a fabric inspection machine before cutting, with colour checked under controlled lighting.

Panels are cut to the approved drawing. On oversize programmes, dimension accuracy at cutting is what holds the finished bed to spec.

Seam construction and bolster attachment are checked in-line, with reinforced stress points verified before filling.

Filling weight is controlled against the approved specification so the loft and support stay consistent between production runs.

Part of our standard finished-product inspection. Each finished piece passes through needle detection before packing.

Beds are vacuum compressed and cartoned, then drop tested to confirm the packed unit survives transit.
Colour continuity follows the same discipline as construction: incoming fabric is inspected on a fabric inspection machine and colour verified under a standard light source before bulk approval, so a repeat order does not arrive a shade away from the first. The checkpoints above are the ones that decide whether an oversize bed holds its dimensions and its loft; our full quality management framework across all pet bedding categories is documented on the kwaliteitsbeheer van huisdierbedden page.
The same bed construction is not right for every channel. Here is how the specification shifts.
Tight cost engineering, a fixed size ladder, and cartons designed for pallet or floor display. High-density foam where the price band allows.
Heavier fabrics, memory foam or hybrid filling, boxed presentation and a dimension range built for in-store display footprints — the build standard behind comfortable, luxury dog beds for large dogs.
Cartons sized to parcel-network fee bands, plus specification sheets and photography-ready samples for listing content.
Programmes that sit outside these three channels are routed to the line built for them: outdoor and seasonal construction to our fabrikant van hondenbedden voor buiten programme, foam-led pressure products to the orthopedic programme, covers built for repeated laundering to washable, and flat mat formats without a raised rim to dog mat manufacturing. The custom-dimension and vacuum-compression logic on this page applies to all of them.
Four credentials your retail buyer will ask for first, and the three production nodes your order can run through.
Three pet-bed manufacturing nodes under one quality system, so a capacity or logistics problem in one region does not stop the programme.
Where oversize construction is engineered, sampled and produced.
Domestic node for fast onboarding of US programmes and short-run samples before bulk.
An additional oversize-bed base that adds supply continuity, and can offer tariff and origin advantages for qualifying programmes.
Which node an order runs through is a commercial decision rather than a manufacturing one, and we raise it at quoting: an EU or Japan programme with significant carton volume can often run through the Cambodia node, which can bring tariff and origin advantages depending on the destination’s rules, while a US buyer needing a fast sample or a domestic restock is covered by the American node. All three nodes run the same incoming, in-line and pre-shipment inspection stages, and export documentation and destination-market testing are scoped by our in-house documentation team.
Send us the dimensions, target dog weight and retail channel. We will come back with a filling recommendation, a dimensioned drawing and a sampling plan.
